Akbar's Tomb at Sikandra is a major tourist attraction
in Agra , its construction was started by Akbar himself
though later on Jahangir his son completed it .
Sikandra Akbar's Tomb and the great builder that he was Akbar designed many artistic
monuments in his empire and also founded Fatehpur Sikri.
He formulated the plan of the tomb near the Yamuna river
in Sikandra. It was to be in the center of an expansive
garden surrounded by high walls.
This tomb constructed on pillar and beam principle
is made up in a series of tiers. Akbar's Tomb at Sikandra
has Indo-Saracenic architecture with unique design in
the Tours in Agra.
There are intricate carved structures and huge gateway
which is modeled on the same pattern as Buland Darwaza
in Fatehpur Sikri. You will find exquisite mosaic patterns
on the gateway .
There are four minarets all intricately
decorated with intricate patterns on white marble with
red sandstone.
You have the tomb amidst Charbagh, which
is a unique type of Mughal garden divided into equal
four parts. This garden further adds to the attraction
of the place in the Tour of Agra.
Akbar's Tomb is located 4 km from Agra , and is a fine
example of blend of Hindu, Christian, Islamic, Buddhist,
Jain motifs.
The tomb has three tiers minarets on its
four sides. In the Charbagh you will also find Baradi
Palace which was built by Sikander Lodhi after whom
the city of Sikandra also gets its name.
There is wide causeway which leads to the Akbar's Tomb
, which is in total five storey and resembles the shape
of a truncated pyramid.
You will find a unique aspect
that is the main tomb is square in shape , which is
not found in other Mughal buildings in the Tour of
Agra.
Description of Akbar's Tomb:
· Ground floor - Spacious cloisters divided
with bays ,piers and arches on all four sides. The entrance
has profusion of intricate carvings and decorations.
You will find tombs of Akbar's daughters as well here.
· Second Floor - An arcaded balcony with
23 bays , arches and square pillar along with intricate
carvings adorn this place.
· Third and Fourth storey- Much smaller
in size and have similar plan with arches balanced with
pillars and chattris.
· Fifth Floor- Constructed with white
marble throughout unlike other floors which are made
of red sandstone in the Tourist Attraction in Agra.
