Tour of Jama Masjid - Jama Masjid in Agra and the construction of
Agra Jama Masjid is credited to
Shah Jahan in the later half of the sixteenth century.
The largest mosque in India was built during the reign
of Emperor Akbar and is one of the most venerated sites
in Fatehpur Sikri. There is no doubt therefore that
the Agra Jama Masjid features as one of the major tourist
attractions in Agra near Taj Mahal in the Tours in
Agra.
Shah Jahan had dedicated Jama Masjid to the memory
of his beloved daughter Jahanara Begum. Agra Jama
Masjid has been built on a high plinth that can be approached
by a flight of stairs. It also features a spacious courtyard
where the faithful can congregate to offer their prayers.
The main structure is flanked by the Jammat Khana Hall
and the Zenana Rauza on either side. The mosque is crowned
by three massive sandstone domes. The mosque also houses
the shrine of the Sufi religious leader Sheikh Salim
Chisti. The exquisite workmanship displayed in the lattice
marble screens will leave you spellbound. The skilled
craftsmanship is also evident in the inscriptions, inlaid
geometric designs and the glazed tiles in the Tourist
Attractions in Agra.
The Buland Darwaza, the grand gateway leads you to
the mosque. This monumental structure was built to commemorate
the triumph of Akbar in the Kandesh military campaign.
Still in use today, Jama Masjid Agra is one of the major
landmarks of the city. There is an austere beauty about
the mosque that cannot escape an observant eye. Another
equally splendid gate is the Badshahi Darwaza whose
grandeur also has an unavoidable quality about it.
