Delhi the capital of India is an important tourist
destination not only for the presence of many monuments
like the Red Fort,Qutab Minar, Jama Masjid etc but also
because of a number of memorials like Raj Ghat,Shanti
Vana, Shakti Sthal, Veer Bhumi. The memorials in Delhi
are an important tourist attractions.
These memorials in Delhi are to pay homage to the great
leaders whose sacrifice and contribution to the nation
truly needs to be remembered.
Delhi Memorials include
- Raj Ghat : Built in
memory of the Father of Nation , Mahatma Gandhi , who
was assassinated on 31st January ,1948. Raj Ghat(meaning
King's court in loose terms) is situated on Ring Road
and is 4 km from Janpath .The memorial marks the cremation
site of the great freedom fighter. There is an eternal
flame burning always here and the memorial is open to
the sky. There is an epitaph where the last words uttered
by Gandhi ,"Hey Ram" is inscribed. Visitors
are required to remove their shoes etc when they come
here as a sign of respect. There are many other memorials
in Delhi in close proximity to Raj Ghat on the banks
of River Yamuna.
- Shanti Vana: Just
adjacent to Raj Ghat lies the Shanti Vanaa (which means
the forest of peace)This is the place where India's
first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru was cremated.
The area beautifully maintained with a park adorned
by trees which were planted by visiting dignitaries
and heads of state.
- Shakti Sthal: Shakti
Sthal (Place of Power)is the memorial of India's first
lady prime minister Indira Gandhi. She was assassinated
during her third tenure as prime minister in 1984. This
memorial in Delhi is located between the Ring Road and
Yamuna river near Raj Ghat. It is open all days and
is free to all.The monument is a huge monolith of grayish
stone.
- Veer Bhumi : This
is the memorial of Rajiv Gandhi , who was assassinated
on 21st may,1991 in Sriperumbadur. He was the prime
minister of India from 1984-89. The memorial whose literal
meaning is 'Land of Brave' was recently adorned with
a large lotus in bloom intricately carved out in stone
, also there are 46 lotuses surrounding it signifying
the number of years Rajiv Gandhi lived.
- Vijay Ghat: Memorial
of Lal Bahdur Shastri , Prime Minster of India, it means
Victory Platform. This is in honor of the victory which
India got under his leadership during the Indo-Pakistan
war of 1965.
- Samta Sthal : In honor
of Jagjivan Ram, deputy Prime Minster of India .
- Kisan Ghat: In respect
of Choudhary Charan Singh , Prime Minster of India .
- Ekta Sthal: Place
of Unity, this is in memory of President of India,Giani
Zail Singh.
The memorials in Delhi are mostly locate on Ring Road
and are easily accessible as Delhi has a good transport
network.
