Bahai Temple is also known as Lotus Temple in Delhi.
It is located west of Connaught Place, Mandir Marg,
Central Delhi. Bahai Temple is a symbol of peace. This
lotus flower shaped temple is a place of warmth and
meditation.
Bahai Temple boasts of a beautiful lotus shape made
of marble. The beauty of this marvel is also enhanced
by the lush garden set in its vicinity. To say it so,
it is quite similar in look to the Sydney opera house.
Bahai Temple is open to all people. Its architectural
style differs widely from the other temples in the world.
It has nine sides and central dome that symbolize the
diversity of the human race and its essential oneness.
The devotional programs of the Bahai Temple include
prayers, meditations, and the reading of selections
from the sacred scriptures of the Bahá'í
Faith and other world religions. In the Bahai Temple
music is provided however without Choirs.
In the Bahai Temple in New Delhi traditional Indian
ways of construction were applied along with most modern
Western engineering design. Behind this grand structure,
there is a commendable contribution of Fariborz Sahba,
a Canadian architect of Iranian origin.
Fariborz Sahba spent 10 years in designing and project
management of this temple. In this venture, he took
the help of a team of about 800 engineers, technicians,
artisans and workers.
The Bahai Temple or the Lotus temple is standing pure
and unblemished above the stagnant and muddy waters
like that of a real blooming lotus flower. The structure
of this temple is made of three ranks of nine petals.
All the petals come from a single podium that elevates
the building above the surrounding plain. To provide
it a complete look of lotus, the first two ranks of
petals are made to curve inward that cover the inner
dome. The third rank on the contrary opens outward.
The third outward rank of petals are so designed that
they form canopies over the nine entrances.
There are nine pools surrounding the Bahai temple on
the outside to render effects of the green leaves of
the lotus flower to the structure. To put it simply,
this structure involves an intricate geometric design
in which there are virtually no straight lines.
It is believed that the design of Bahai temple could
not have been executed anywhere else as has been executed
in Indian sub-continent. Besides, Indians also identify
this flower as a symbol of emulation as it teaches them
to be detached from material preoccupations.
