Humayun's Tomb is the first garden tomb in India. It
has 36 grids and water channel paths running along the
place. The garden of the tomb is designed in Persian
style.
The lush garden around the tomb is square in
shape and is divided into four big squares by causeways
and channels.
These squares are further divided into
smaller parts creating the Char Bagh. Entry to Humayun's
Tomb in Delhi is led through an axial processional track
with gateways on the way.
The Humayun's Tomb boasts of an octagonal shape. It
is constructed on a platform and row of pillars. Under
the platform, you can see three more graves of less
popular people. Humayun's Tomb is basically made of
red sandstone.
However, you can find an intelligent
use of black and white marbles in the structure that
break the uniformity and monotony.
Humayun's Tomb is based on the guidelines of Islamic
Paradise Gardens.
It is considered to be an inspiring
force behind the later Mughal landmark architectures
that include the world famous Taj Mahal as well.
Built in 1570, Humayun's Tomb has been declared a World
Heritage Site of UNESCO and a protected monument under
Archeological Survey of India.
Humayun's Tomb was built by his Persian wife, Haji
Begum or Bega begum. She became widow after the accident
of Humayun, who took over the Mughal Dynasty after Babar's
death.
She undertook the charge of the construction
and with the help of Persian Architect Mirak Mirza Ghiyuath
created this magnificent structure.
