Delhi is a perfect blend of old and new , you have
here the Old Delhi with its havelis and narrow lanes
and on the other side the contemporary buildings , posh
localities in New Delhi. Delhi is a place of historical
significance and you have here many monuments which
depict the tales of the past.
One of these is the India Gate which is located on
Rajpath in New Delhi . The original name of the monument
was All India War Memorial . This monument is an important
landmark in Delhi and it was built by Edwin Lutyens
. This was in memory of the 80000 Indian soldiers killed
during World War I and Afghan Wars. The foundation stone
of India Gate in Delhi was laid down by Duke of Connaught
on February 10th,1921.
You will find the names of the soldiers inscribed on
the walls , and there is Amar Jawan Jyoti which is burning
ever since 1971 . This is the flame of the immortal
warriors which remembers also the unknown soldiers.
Description :
India Gate is 42 meters high arch , similar to the
war memorial in France , Arc-de-Triomphe . The monument
has a black marble cenotaph with a rifle placed on its
barrel. You will find the words Amar Jawan inscribed
on all faces of the cenotaph. The monument is composed
of red sandstone. The word India is inscribed on top
of the arch. Names of over 70000 soldiers are found
inscribed on the walls of the India Gate.
India Gate attracts tourists also for

- The famous boat club which makes the place and
ideal picnic spot.
In the evening the cool breeze and brightly illuminated
India Gate attracts many visitors. You also can have
a good view of the Rashtrapati Bhawan from the base
of the monument.

backgrounds provides a breathtaking view. On Republic
Day on 26th January , parades are taken out with India
Gate in the backdrop standing as a monument of sacrifice,
bravery and courage.
