There are mosques, temples and forts in Delhi that have the sign of old Muslim architecture. Among these Jantar Mantar in New Delhi is a unique piece of architecture.

Jantar Mantar is a wonderful architecture created by Sawai Jai Singh of Rajasthan. The founder ruler of Pink City Jaipur had an inclination for art and science. Jantar Mantar is the result of this passion. In 1724 Sawai Jai Singh made this astronomical structure to trace the heavenly bodies. Jantar Mantar is also an authentic example of technological advancement of Rajput dynasty. The term Jantar Mantar owes its name from English words. Jantar means instrument and Mantar means formula. So as a whole it means instrumental formula to decide the movements of the planets.

Sawai Jai Singh had built five Jantar Mantar. Jantar Mantar in New Delhi is one of them. The Jantras have various names such as Samrat Jantra, Jai Prakash, Ram Jantra and Niyati Chakra. The Samrat Jantra or the huge Sundial was created by Jai Singh himself. The other instruments measure the activities of planets and the time of eclipses. On the southwest corner there are two pillars that find out the longest and shortest days of the year. There is a legend behind the creation of Jantar Mantar. It is believed that there was a quarrel between the Hindu and Muslim astrologer in the court of Muhammad Shah regarding the perfect time of departure of the king on an expedition.
