Jantar Mantar is a wonderful architecture created
by Sawai Jai Singh of Rajasthan. The founder ruler of
Pink City Jaipur had an inclination for art and science.
Jantar Mantar is the result of this passion. In 1724
Sawai Jai Singh made this astronomical structure to
trace the heavenly bodies. Jantar Mantar is also an
authentic example of technological advancement of Rajput
dynasty. The term Jantar Mantar owes its name from English
words. Jantar means instrument and Mantar means formula.
So as a whole it means instrumental formula to decide
the movements of the planets.
Sawai Jai Singh had built five Jantar Mantar. Jantar
Mantar in New Delhi is one of them. The Jantras have
various names such as Samrat Jantra, Jai Prakash, Ram
Jantra and Niyati Chakra. The Samrat Jantra or the huge
Sundial was created by Jai Singh himself. The other
instruments measure the activities of planets and the
time of eclipses. On the southwest corner there are
two pillars that find out the longest and shortest days
of the year. There is a legend behind the creation of
Jantar Mantar. It is believed that there was a quarrel
between the Hindu and Muslim astrologer in the court
of Muhammad Shah regarding the perfect time of departure
of the king on an expedition. Sawai Jai Singh gave his
lofty idea about the Jantar Mantar and it was accepted
and created. Jantar Mantar situated near the Parliament
House is a symbol of ancient India's scientific activities.
