Architect and Designer of Taj Mahal - Though Taj Mahal is considered the most splendid example
of Mughal architecture, yet the identity of the Architect of Taj Mahal is shrouded in mystery. It is assumed
that Shah Jahan had a major role to play in the designing
of Taj Mahal. It is a big possibility that in his obsession
for absolute perfection, Shah Jahan could not trust
anybody else with this mammoth task. He himself chose
to personally supervise the transformation of his dream
into reality. Many historians corroborate the fact that
Shah Jahan had an interest in architecture and had substantial
knowledge about architectural designs and decorations.
But it would be too much to assume that the principal
Taj Mahal architect was the Mughal Emperor himself.
Such a grand piece of architecture has a professional
and skilled architect behind its construction, not a
mere connoisseur of art or an amateur architect.
A hint that an Italian jeweler Geronimo Veroneo might
be the chief Taj Mahal architect has sparked many controversies.
This theory however did not hold much favor with many
historians and it has been concluded that even if the
Italian was assigned the task, he was intimidated by
the enormity of the task and fled to Surat. Many have
put forth the argument that it was absurd for a single
person to tackle this huge royal project. It was definitely
the combined effort of a team of architects and designers
who created this magic.
One of the famous legends associated with the construction
of Taj Mahal is that Shah Jahan was to keen to ensure
that there should be no replications of Taj Mahal anywhere
else in the world. His obsession led him to chop the
hands of some of his master craftsmen. About 20,000
laborers were deployed in giving shape to the emperor's
dream. The archaeologists have stumbled upon some of
their names etched on the sandstone slabs of the boundary
wall.
