Udaipur Palace - The regal white City Palace situated in the hub of
Udaipur, was formerly built by Maharana Udai Singh of
the Sisodia Rajput clan and extended to its current
form by succeeding Maharanas.
Built in granite and marble
and bounded by crenellated fort walls, the largest palace
complex in Rajasthan stands on a crest overlooking the
Pichola Lake.
Maharana Uday Singh initiated in the construction of
the Udaipur Palace but following Maharanas added numerous palaces
and structures to the complex retained an astonishing
consistency to the design.
The entry to the Palace is
from the Hati Pol, the Elephant gate.
The Bari Pol or
the Big gate brings you to the Tripolia, the Triple
gate.
It was once a custom that the Maharana would weigh
under this gate in gold and silver, which was distributed
to the masses.
Balconies, cupolas and towers triumph the palace to
give a breathtaking view of the lake.
The Mor Chawk
is the peacock square and gains its name from the vibrant
blue mosaic in glass of a peacock that decorates its
walls.
The Jagdish Temple where Lord Vishnu is worshipped can
be seen here. The 'Great Gate' or 'Bara Pol' is the
opening to the first courtyard.
There are marble arches,
an elephant fighting arena and many gardens within the
palace complex.
The rooms within the palace are marvelously
decorated and painted.
The City Palace Udaipur is a heritage building, which
showcases the finest elements of Rajput culture and
the arts.
The spectacular buildings within the Udaipur Palace are influenced by European and Chinese
architecture and are amazing in the range and aesthetic
beauty of their artwork.
