After the Chittorgarh Fort in Mewar the second Fort
of the Historical importance in Rajasthan is the Kumbhalgarh
Fort in Jaisalmer.
Kumbhalgarh Fort, Jaisalmer is located
at a distance of 64 kms north of Udaipur in the wild
ambience. Constructed by Rana Kumbha in the 15th century
it is one of the most inaccessible forts due to its
uncanny geographical location.
And that is why it remained
un-captured. Kumbhalgarh Fort, Jaisalmer has also remained
the shelter for the rulers of Mewar and it is also the
birth place of King Maharana Pratap.
The fort has served
as the epitome of the undaunted chivalry and valor as
it fell only once and that too at the combined efforts
of the Mughals and the Ambers.
There are also many splendid
temples built by the Mauryas among the most striking
is the Badal Mahal.
The surrounding views of the Kumbhalgarh Fort in Jaisalmer
are very picturesque and delight the visitors by its
charm.
The fort also houses the ruins which are very
mystical and a ride through it could prove to be very
exciting.
This fort was renovated by Maharana Fateh
Singh in the 19th century. The fort has thick walls
which is 36 km in stretch.
One of the most salient and
unique attribute of this fort is that it housres another
fort inside it, the Kartargarh and was built by Maharana
Fateh Singh.
There are 365 temples and shrines and one of shrines
include the enormous Shivlinga which is dedicated to
the Lord Shiva.
Kumbhalgarh Fort, Jaisalmer also has
in its surroundings a sanctuary that includes; wolf,
leopard, jackal and a variety of birds.
