Jodhpur Fort - Jodhpur Mehrangarh Fort is perched on a steep hill and is one
of the largest forts in India.
The fort has been a witness
to the magnificence of a bygone era. The beauty and
the opulence of copious palaces in the fort showcase
a saga of hard sandstones yielding to the chisels of
skilled Jodhpuri sculptures.
Seven gates have to be
crossed to set your footstep into this massive fort.
Some of these gates still bear marks of many a cordon
that this fort has withstood. Mehrangarh Fort boasts
17 feet thickness and 68 feet high walls.
The Mehrangarh Fort comprises of many palaces, which
are known for their elaborate carvings and rambling
courtyards.
Moti Mahal or the Pearl Palace has a gracefully
carved stone screen and treasures the Sringar Chowki,
regal throne of Jodhpur.
Umaid Villas houses the Rajput
miniature paintings and Ajit Villas exhibits musical
instruments and the regal costumes.
Both these villas
are joined by a gorgeous mirror room.
The Jodhpur Fort museum houses exquisite royal palanquins,
arms, costumes, paintings and decorated rooms
Rao Jodha founded Mehrangarh Fort in 1459 but successive
rulers of Jodhpur have also added to it over the centuries.
